Michael Jensen
IFS Practitioner
IFS Institute Level 1 Trained, Bachelor of Psychotherapy & Counseling Student
Michael was born and raised in Canberra, where much of his family still lives and where he continues to call home. Outside of therapy, he enjoys staying active, spending time in nature, Brazilian jiu-jitsu and creativity through music.
A decade after Michael decided therapy "wouldn't work" due to an initial encounter with a therapist who didn't listen and who explained all the ways that Michael "was the problem", he stumbled into the chair of an IFS therapist and felt like things just clicked. Insight led to changes that were felt, not just thought. Problems that had once seemed like personal failings could instead be understood as parts with protective intentions, opening the possibility for greater curiosity, compassion and a different relationship with himself. That process continues to this day and strongly informs the way Michael approaches therapeutic work.
Michael is a final-year Bachelor of Psychotherapy and Counselling student practitioner and is IFS Level 1 trained He is also a graduate of the year-long Compassionate Inquiry Professional Training developed by Dr Gabor Maté and a Conscious Connected Breathwork practitioner, having completed two years of Australian Breathwork Association-approved training under the guidance of Mirabai Rose. Michael has also completed the MAPS MDMA Therapy Training Program. Michael continues to deepen his skills and receive professional training in attachment theory, trauma, PTSD, psychedelic-assisted therapy, somatic approaches and the integration of mindfulness, spirituality and non-ordinary state practices.
Michael is also passionate about social engagement having spent time volunteering across mental health peer support, homelessness, childhood learning and palliative care services.
Before moving into psychotherapy, Michael drew on a background in systems engineering and information technology to build a career in cyber security. He continues to find parallels between that work and IFS, particularly in the process of understanding complex systems made up of interconnected parts, each influencing the whole.
Michael supports those experiencing anxiety, depression, stress, hopelessness, anger, problematic substance use or those looking to undertake spiritual exploration in order to live with more connection and fulfillment.
